As chapter three started off, before Victor left Geneva to go to the University of Ingolstadt his mother Caroline gets scarlet fever from Elizabeth and dies. She tells Victor and Elizabeth before she dies that she wants them to get married. When he gets to the University he meets with a professor of natural philosophy M. Krempe, who tells Victor that all of that time he spent on alchemists was wasted. He attends a class of chemistry by Waldman who tells Victor to pursue his studies in Science. From there he started to study how the human body is built and how it falls apart for years. After he felt that he knew all the work his teachers taught him he started to work on discovering the secret of life. It described him as being obsessed, pale and lonely. He didn't talk to anyone or do any of his studies.
Victor finally creates his creation "Frankenstein", but Victor was so horrified of his appearance and described him as the ugliest thing he has seen. He tried to force himself to sleep in the next room and woke up with the monster looking at him smiling. Victor left and tried to avoid going back home, and saw his childhood friend Henry Clerval and invited him to his apartment and the monster was gone. Victor then became sick by the months of working and shock at what he created. When Victor recovered from Henry nursing him, he then gave received a letter from Elizabeth who came to visit while Victor was sick. Her letter told Victor that she is worried about him and she thinks that he should write to his family in Geneva. Victor then introduces Henry to his professors but feels sick when he sees chemicals and the professors, so Victor and Henry wait to go back to Geneva to visit family and enjoy the beauty of nature.
